Chicago’s United Center arena owners have announced a groundbreaking $7 billion investment poised to reshape the city’s West Side. This ambitious initiative, known as The 1901 Project, has been developed in collaboration with city officials and community leaders.

The 1901 Project will span 55 acres, featuring a blend of housing, retail, entertainment, and green spaces. United Center’s new leadership, Michael Reinsdorf and Danny Wirtz, revealed that this is set to be the largest private investment in the West Side’s history.

The Reinsdorf and Wirtz families are spearheading The 1901 Project, aiming to invigorate the West Side with new development, bridge neighborhood gaps, and enhance opportunities for residents and businesses. The initiative is expected to create around 12,000 permanent jobs, boosting long-term economic growth and stability for the community.

“The 1901 Project is a testament to our families’ enduring commitment to Chicago’s West Side,” Reinsdorf said. This development will foster a thriving, interconnected neighborhood and bring substantial benefits to the community we cherish.”

The project is a multi-phase endeavor over approximately 10 years. The first phase, set to kick off in spring 2025, will transform current surface parking lots adjacent to the arena into a vibrant area featuring:

A 6,000-seat theater-style music hall

• An elevated park: A unique green space providing over 25 acres for public recreation and community gatherings.
• Upgraded parking facilities, improved pedestrian access, and enhanced walkability, lighting, and bike lanes.
• Hotel and retail spaces: A mix of hospitality and retail options to stimulate local commerce and job creation.

“Our vision for The 1901 Project is to bring transformative investment and economic opportunities to the West Side, while respecting and enhancing its rich history. We aim to collaborate with our neighbors to foster job creation, housing, and community resources for a brighter future,” Wirtz said.

Phase I will include partnerships with organizations like Hire360 and Communities Empowered Through Construction to build a strong local workforce. The project will also prioritize minority business involvement through MBE/WBE construction partnerships, apprenticeships, and subcontracting opportunities.

Future phases of the development will feature a range of housing options, from affordable to luxury, ensuring a diverse residential mix. Transportation improvements will enhance connectivity through biking, walking, driving, and rail. The design will incorporate green spaces, sustainability features, and safety-enhancing elements like decorative lighting and landscaping.
