The school that Ludwig Mies van der Rohe built has a new leader: The Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago has named Reed Kroloff as dean of the College of Architecture.

Kroloff, who has a B.A. from Yale University and an M.Arch. from the University of Texas at Austin, previously served as director of the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Mich., and dean of the Tulane School of Architecture in New Orleans. The recipient of the American Academy in Rome’s 2003 Rome Prize Fellowship, he served as editor-in-chief of Architecture magazine, the predecessor of ARCHITECT.

"Very few schools have had such a profound influence on architecture," Kroloff tells ARCHITECT. "It’s an honor to join the students, faculty, and staff of IIT as they sustain and enhance the transformative legacy of Modernism begun here by Mies and embodied so timelessly by his landmark Crown Hall, still home to the College of Architecture."

Kroloff and his partner, Casey Jones of Perkins+Will, recently relocated to Chicago. The couple ran a successful consulting practice, having led the architect-selection processes for such high profile projects as the High Line, the Aspen Art Museum, and the Pentagon 9/11 Memorial. Kroloff succeeds architect, historian, and preservationist Michelangelo Sabatino. Dutch architect Wiel Arets stepped down as dean two years ago.
