Peter Kindel
Peter J. Kindel is an architect, urbanist, and Cities & Climate Lead with SOM’s global City Design Practice. With over 25 years of experience designing innovative large-scale, mixed-use projects throughout the world, Peter specializes in the sustainable integration of architecture, mobility concepts and ecosystems, with an emphasis on environmental restoration and cultural identity.
He also leads design & research related to urbanism, climate change, and ecosystem restoration, including National Geographic's Future City, The Hong Kong Waterline (a vision for conservation and recreation), Contested Territories (a plan for sea-level rise in San Francisco Bay), Design for Wildfire Resiliency in California, and The Last Four Miles, a plan for Chicago's lakefront, among others.
Projects to which Peter has contributed have received numerous international, national, and local design awards from the Urban Land Institute, the American Institute of Architects, the American Society of Landscape Architects, the US Green Building Council, and the Congress for New Urbanism. His writing has been featured in prominent media outlets including the World Economic Forum, Bloomberg, Fast Company, and National Geographic.
