Skender Commences Construction on United Yards, a Three-Structure Affordable Housing Project in Chicago’s Back of the Yards Locale
In the role of general contractor, Skender has recently initiated the construction of United Yards, an innovative affordable housing development situated in Chicago’s Back of the Yards neighborhood. This sustainable project comprises three buildings and is the result of a collaborative effort between developers Celadon Partners and Blackwood Group. The architectural vision, spearheaded by DesignBridge, encompasses a new six-story apartment building housing 45 units, complete with a ground-floor entrepreneurial hub and a dedicated space for youth programs at 4703 S. Justine Street. Additionally, the development includes two modular three-flat apartment buildings located at 1639 and 1641 W. 47th Street.
United Yards is a key outcome of the INVEST South/West initiative championed by former Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, aimed at enhancing community vibrancy by introducing more employment opportunities, improved housing options, and essential amenities along 12 commercial corridors in Chicago’s South and West regions.
The Justine Street building, spanning 62,925 square feet, showcases a cast-in-place concrete construction with a blend of masonry, cement panels, and metal panel cladding. Noteworthy features include distinctive stepped planters on the façade, EV charging stations, and a versatile amenity space on the top level. The two three-flat buildings on 47th Street, occupying a single site, will collectively cover 6,804 square feet upon the completion of four construction phases. These buildings boast a unique modular design and are entirely powered by electricity.
Anticipated to be finalized by October 2025, this three-building venture signifies Skender’s ongoing successful collaboration with Celadon, extending their portfolio of community-centric projects such as the Maywood Supportive Living initiative in Maywood, Illinois. Skender's partnership with Blackwood Group, seen in prior joint ventures for projects like the Albany Terrace Apartments in South Lawndale, further underscores their commitment to impactful and community-focused developments.
