Women Lead Construction of Homes for Women in Chicago's Greater Grand Crossing Neighbourhood

Women Lead Construction of Homes for Women in Chicago's Greater Grand Crossing Neighbourhood

In the heart of Chicago's South Side, specifically the Greater Grand Crossing neighbourhood, a notable initiative is taking shape as four new homes begin to rise. What sets these homes apart is not just their intended occupants—each dwelling is being constructed by women, for women.

Located at the intersection of 72nd and South University, this Habitat for Humanity project is particularly special. Every home is designated for a female first-time homeowner, and the construction process itself is entirely driven by women.

Jennifer Parks, serving as the Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity Chicago.“Most of the folks who volunteer with us are in offices right, not in a construction site normally. So it’s our job to provide people with the skills and the training to build the home,” she said. “So at the end of the day they can be like, ‘I helped build that!’”

One such dedicated volunteer team is from ABOC, relinquishing their desk jobs to make a lasting impact on the life of another woman. This marks the fifth project for the ABOC Dream makers, a group committed to combating the declining number of female homeowners. Through their efforts, they have not only raised over $50,000 but have also devoted weeks of hard work, enduring hot days, calloused hands, and dusty boots to provide another woman and her family with a place they can proudly call home.

Parks underscores the profound impact of witnessing these women step into their new homes for the first time—a moment that symbolizes peace and transformation.

This initiative stands as a testament to the collaborative spirit and empowerment fostered by women working together towards a shared goal, creating a memorable experience for both those who will reside in these homes and those who have contributed to their construction.
